Kingdom Hearts 4: Eight Years Later, the Wait Is Over—Release Date and Trailer Revealed
Eight years between games—almost as long as a stay in the Land of the Dead. Fitting, then, that’s exactly where Sora checks in for Kingdom Hearts 4, now officially set for late 2027.
The surprise D23 trailer on August 15 finally ended years of wild speculation around Kingdom Hearts IV. Square Enix unveiled a brand-new world inspired by Pixar’s 2017 film Coco, with Sora battling Heartless in full Día de los Muertos style. The game will launch simultaneously on PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S, while Donald and Goofy seem to be off on their own quest to find their missing friend since the end of the third game.

Late 2027: a release window that ends years of speculation
First announced back in 2021, Kingdom Hearts IV has been the stuff of rumors and radio silence for five long years, with Square Enix dropping only the tiniest crumbs of info. The D23 trailer finally gives us something solid: the game is coming in late 2027, a full eight years after Kingdom Hearts III launched in January 2019. For a saga famous for its epic waits between mainline entries, this is par for the course—but having a date in hand makes the wait a little easier to swallow.
Even better, the game will launch simultaneously on PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. No more timed exclusives splitting the fanbase—everyone gets to dive in together. Preorder pages are already live across all platforms. If Square Enix delivers, 2027 could be a landmark year for the publisher, with Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Final Fantasy XIV Evercold also on the calendar.
Coco world: Pixar makes its Kingdom Hearts debut
Coco, Pixar’s 2017 hit, is the first Disney world officially confirmed for Kingdom Hearts IV. And what a pick. The Land of the Dead is a visual playground—glowing marigold bridges, vibrant skeletons, and mind-bending architecture. The trailer shows Sora exploring this afterlife, rocking Día de los Muertos face paint and wielding a Keyblade themed to the world. The integration looks spot-on: you can tell the dev team wanted to honor the movie’s unique style while giving it that unmistakable Kingdom Hearts twist.

This marks a turning point for the series, which until now mostly drew from classic Disney Animation and a few Pixar properties like Toy Story and Monsters, Inc.. With Coco, Square Enix is showing that the franchise isn’t afraid to explore newer, culturally rich worlds—hinting at a much more diverse lineup in the future.
What the D23 trailer reveals about Kingdom Hearts 4
Beyond the Coco world, the trailer is packed with hints about where this chapter is headed. Story-wise, Sora still seems trapped in Quadratum—the modern, Tokyo-inspired city glimpsed in early footage. Meanwhile, Donald Duck and Goofy are on their own mission to find him, even pestering Hades—the villain from Hercules—for answers. King Mickey also pops up, dropping a classic deadpan: “That’s a lot of new information,” which pretty much sums up how fans are feeling after this trailer. One curious detail: neither Donald nor Goofy appear in the Coco world scenes, suggesting Sora might be flying solo in some Disney worlds this time around.
On the gameplay side, the official Steam description teases a fast, dynamic combat system that blends attacks and magic with a brand-new combo mechanic. Each Keyblade unlocks unique moves, letting players tailor their fighting style. Here’s what stands out from the trailer:

Tetsuya Nomura is involved, and he’s invited fans to “let their imaginations run wild” about what the series could explore. There’s even a dedicated Kingdom Hearts panel scheduled for tomorrow at 10:30 PM French time, streaming live on the saga’s official YouTube channel—maybe we’ll get more on the remaining worlds and this mysterious new show.
