Kojima Doesn’t Even Know If Physint Will Hit PS5: 'Xbox Calls the Shots'

Three decades with Sony wiped out in a Zoom call—now Kojima just watches as Xbox steers his biggest game.

Kojima, a PlayStation icon for thirty years, now has to raise his hand and ask Xbox for permission to see if his game will ever land on Sony’s consoles. Times are changing—and not just a little.

When IGN asked Hideo Kojima about a possible release of Physint on Sony platforms, he was blunt: “I don’t know the answer, that’s a question for Xbox.” Just months ago, this would have been unthinkable—Sony was still funding what Kojima called his biggest commercial project ever. The switch to Microsoft has completely reshuffled the deck.

Xbox in control, Kojima in the dark

Kojima’s statement to IGN left zero room for doubt. Asked if Physint could come to Sony consoles, the Japanese creator volleyed the question right back: “I don’t know the answer, that’s a question for Xbox. All of this will be announced later. I’m not sure yet, and I can’t really comment.” The man who shaped PlayStation’s gaming identity for three decades now has no say in where his own game will be released.

Still, Kojima did add a caveat, reminding everyone that Xbox’s current leadership has long championed a multiplatform approach, aiming to “bring games to as many people as possible, no matter the platform.” But Microsoft is also rethinking its own strategy, with a renewed push for more console exclusives. So, Physint’s PlayStation fate depends on calculations far beyond Kojima Productions’ reach.

A partnership that goes beyond video games

Xbox didn’t snap up Physint just to score a prestige stealth-action title. Kojima says Microsoft’s leadership shares his vision for a transmedia ecosystem, where an IP isn’t just a game—it’s movies, music, even theme park attractions. He points to Nintendo’s approach with Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, with blockbuster animated films and Universal Studios park tie-ins.

For Kojima, this convergence is the industry’s inevitable future. “It’s not just the era of game consoles anymore. You create an IP, and it can become a game, a movie, music—everything comes together,” he explained, adding that augmented reality is likely the next frontier. This transmedia ambition was already at the heart of the original Sony project—the 2024 announcement was even filmed at Columbia Pictures HQ—but now it’s Xbox carrying the torch.

‘The biggest commercial title I can make’

What shocked Kojima most about Sony’s decision was the nature of the project they canceled. Unlike Death Stranding—a proudly niche delivery game that baffled some fans—Physint was designed from the start as a blockbuster for everyone. “It’s the biggest commercial title I can make. I never thought Physint would end up on the cancellation list,” he admitted. The project’s origins go back to a health scare during Covid, which made him rethink how much time he had left to create. “Maybe I only have ten years left. I can’t make Metal Gear again—it belongs to Konami. But I realized I had to create a new action-stealth game.”

Hideo Kojima Reveals Lead Cast Member for PHYSINT

Kojima promises the gameplay will deliver: “I have to say this carefully—anything involving espionage is going to be fun, period, no matter the game.” The team is currently experimenting with new enemy AI technologies that could shape the game’s narrative direction. Bill Skarsgård, who broke out in John Wick 4, has been cast as the lead.

30 years of collaboration erased in a Zoom call

The split between Kojima and Sony happened in June 2026, during a Zoom call with studio president Shinji Hirano and talent development head Aki Saito. Sony simply announced that Physint’s funding was over. Kojima says he felt “neither anger nor sadness,” just a harsh wake-up call. “I’ve worked with them for about 30 years… Mr. Ken Kutaragi, Mr. Hirai—I was close to them. But it hasn’t been like that lately. I realized this is just reality now.”

The urgency was even greater because Kojima Productions is still an independent studio. “We’re independent. That means if they can’t fund us anymore, our studio could collapse,” he pointed out. The Physint team remains small, with the main focus on finishing OD, the horror game being developed with Jordan Peele. Here’s what we know about the project so far:

Kojima now finds himself in a totally new position: a spectator as others decide which platforms his most ambitious game will reach. The creator of Metal Gear Solid built his legend on total creative control. This time, Microsoft holds the cards—and the silence on a possible PlayStation release could last a long while.
