Onimusha Dawn of Dreams Haunts PS Plus August 18—The Lost Chapter Returns

Dawn of Dreams bridges the gap—Capcom’s timing is no accident
Published 11 August, 2026

The Onimusha everyone forgot is back to haunt PS Plus. Capcom is resurrecting Dawn of Dreams on August 18—just in time to get you warmed up for September’s big reboot.

Released in 2006 on the best-selling console of all time, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams spent two decades lurking in the shadows of its legendary predecessors. Its arrival in the PS Plus Premium Classics catalog couldn’t be better timed: exactly one month before Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on September 4, right in the middle of what’s shaping up to be a historic PS5 fall season.

Dawn of Dreams: the Onimusha nobody played

The Onimusha saga defined the PS2 era with its first three entries—samurai hack-and-slash classics, all. But when Dawn of Dreams dropped in 2006, the PlayStation 2 was already on its way out. The PS3 was looming, gamers’ eyes were on the next-gen horizon, and this fourth chapter slipped under the radar despite solid reviews. The result? It’s the missing link of the franchise—the one even die-hard fans often skipped.

And that’s a shame, because Dawn of Dreams actually shook up the formula. New hero, bigger cast, local co-op—plenty of fresh ideas gave it a unique flavor. Twenty years later, its comeback is a second chance for a game that deserved way more than to be forgotten.

Perfect timing before September’s reboot

It’s hard to believe this is just a coincidence. By making Dawn of Dreams available on August 18, Capcom and PlayStation are dropping this classic exactly one month before Onimusha: Way of the Sword—the big reboot set for September 4. It’s the perfect chance for players to dive back into the saga’s world before the next chapter kicks off.

The groundwork’s been laid these past few years. Onimusha: Warlords and Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny both got remasters, making almost the whole saga playable on modern hardware. With Dawn of Dreams joining the party, only one episode is missing to complete the set—but more on that in a bit. Whether you’re a curious newcomer or a nostalgic fan, now’s the perfect time to marathon Onimusha before the fall rush.

Free on PS Plus Premium, $20 for everyone else

When it comes to access, you’ve got two options. PS Plus Premium subscribers can download Dawn of Dreams at no extra cost starting August 18, as it joins the service’s Classics catalog. If you don’t have Premium, you can still grab the game on the PlayStation Store for $20. This modern port should come with a few upgrades, though Capcom hasn’t revealed the details yet.

On Reddit, the news sparked a mix of hype and frustration. One player summed it up: “Too bad Capcom isn’t adding trophy support for these Classics, but it’s cool to see another Onimusha on modern hardware.” Another got nostalgic for the co-op mode: “Not as good as O3, sure, but co-op was what made the game for me growing up. Finally playing Onimusha with my brother. That, and the Street Fighter costumes.”

Onimusha 3 is still missing (and probably always will be)

Even with all this momentum, there’s still a gaping hole in the modern collection. Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, released in 2004 with Jean Reno in the spotlight, will almost certainly never get remastered or ported to current platforms. The reason is painfully simple: licensing issues—most likely tied to the use of the French actor’s likeness—are blocking any re-release.

It’s even more frustrating since Demon Siege is considered by many to be the best entry in the series. Players will have to stick with their original PS2 copies or find other ways to revisit it. So, the Onimusha saga on modern hardware will remain three out of four—a compromise fans have learned to live with, even if they don’t love it.

With three out of four episodes playable and a bold reboot just weeks away, the Onimusha saga is more alive than ever this fall. August 18 is the perfect jumping-on point—whether you want to prep for Way of the Sword or finally catch up on a PS2 classic that never got its due.
