Intergalactic Returns to the Spotlight—And a Naughty Dog Icon Is Back
A motion capture suit, “Who Let the Dogs Out” blasting in the background, and a secret kept “for a while.” That’s how Robin Atkin Downes announced his return to Naughty Dog—ten years after their last team-up.
Nearly two years with zero gameplay footage, no release window, not even a teaser. Since the 2024 Game Awards, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet had become PlayStation’s most famous ghost, especially after development was slowed by the costly cancellation of The Last of Us Online. It took an actor in a mocap suit to remind the world that this game is, in fact, still alive.

Two years of silence: Intergalactic, Naughty Dog’s ghost game
December 2024, the Game Awards. Neil Druckmann takes the stage and drops Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet with a cinematic trailer that sets the PlayStation community on fire. The studio had sworn, after the painful The Last of Us Part II leaks, that it wouldn’t show its games too early again. The idea was simple: announce closer to launch, avoid years of agonizing hype. Twenty months later, the reality is clear: not a single frame of gameplay, no release window, not even a new teaser.
The rare official statements didn’t help. Tati Gabrielle, who plays protagonist Jordan, only teased “a different side of Naughty Dog.” Neil Druckmann dropped an Elden Ring reference to describe the gameplay approach, but never got specific. Carefully rationed crumbs that fueled curiosity without ever satisfying it. And then—nothing. Until yesterday.
Robin Atkin Downes breaks the silence: “I’ve been keeping this secret for a while”
On August 20, 2026, Robin Atkin Downes posted a short video on X, suited up in motion capture gear, with the Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet logo on screen and Baha Men’s Who Let the Dogs Out playing—a wink to the “Dawgs” nickname he uses for Naughty Dog. “I’ve been keeping this secret for a while. The journey continues! Awesome to be working with the Dawgs again!” he wrote in the caption.

The reassuring part? That “for a while.” Downes didn’t just sign on yesterday: he’s already been working on the project for some time. Mocap sessions are in full swing, recording is underway. For a game many doubted was even moving forward, this is solid proof that the Naughty Dog machine is still running.
A Naughty Dog veteran returns: who is Robin Atkin Downes?
Robin Atkin Downes is no stranger to fans of the California studio. His first gig with Naughty Dog goes back to 2007, voicing main antagonist Atoq Navarro in the original Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Since then, he’s become a recurring face at the studio, racking up roles for nearly a decade. His Naughty Dog resume speaks for itself:
- Atoq Navarro in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (2007)
- Tenzin in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009)
- Talbot in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (2011)
- Vincent Perez in Uncharted: Golden Abyss (PS Vita)
- Robert in The Last of Us (2013)
- Hector Alcazar in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016)
One thing stands out: Downes has mostly played villains at Naughty Dog. Navarro, Talbot, Robert, Alcazar—the dark side is strong with this one. Hard not to see a hint about his role in Intergalactic. His last project with the studio was back in 2016—a ten-year gap. This reunion is no accident.
What we (actually) know about Intergalactic: the full rundown
Despite the long silence, the few details dropped since 2024 sketch out an ambitious, unusual project for Naughty Dog. The action takes place thousands of years in the future. Jordan A. Munn, a bounty hunter played by Tati Gabrielle, crash-lands on Sempiria, a planet cut off from all outside contact for over 600 years. A sci-fi religion dominates society, and the story will dig into themes of faith—and what happens when belief turns to fanaticism.
Gameplay-wise, it’s a sharp turn. Where Uncharted and The Last of Us were all about guns, Intergalactic is said to feature a hack-and-slash system inspired by Elden Ring, according to Druckmann himself. In the reveal trailer, Jordan wields a glowing blade, battling robots in futuristic settings. The cast is stacked: Kumail Nanjiani, Tony Dalton, Ashley Scott, and Troy Baker join Gabrielle—and now Downes—on the project.
If Naughty Dog is starting to reveal its cast, it could mean a bigger showcase is on the way. The studio might finally be shifting from radio silence to a slow drip of info. All eyes are on 2027, when a PlayStation event or the next Game Awards could finally pull back the curtain on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet gameplay. After two years of nothing, it’s about time.
