Marvel’s Wolverine: Insomniac Learns from Spider-Man’s Biggest Flaw

The studio ends the debate with a single, definitive answer.

The Marvel’s Wolverine trailer had fans buzzing when the camera followed Jean Grey into a bar—was this a hint at a playable sequence? Insomniac just slammed the door on all the speculation.

Asked about the scene during a preview event at their Los Angeles studio, project director Jess Reiner-Reed and technical lead Mike Fitzgerald looked genuinely puzzled before answering in unison: “Wolverine is our only playable character.” After years of criticism over the Mary Jane sections in Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac is going all-in on Logan—no exceptions—when the game drops September 15 on PS5.

No more MJ stealth: Wolverine is 100% Logan

The statement leaves zero room for doubt. During a two-hour hands-on at Insomniac’s LA offices, Reiner-Reed and Fitzgerald were crystal clear: No stealth missions as a side character, no forced ally segments—from start to finish, you play as Logan. For anyone who gritted their teeth through Mary Jane’s stealth in Marvel’s Spider-Man, this is a massive relief. Those sections, often called the trilogy’s weakest link, broke up the action and frustrated plenty of fans. Insomniac got the message.

And yet, Insomniac had every reason to do otherwise. Marvel’s Wolverine is packed with charismatic side characters—Mystique, Sabretooth, Jean Grey—who could easily have justified a playable cameo. But the line is drawn, and it’s not moving. While most narrative action games juggle multiple perspectives to keep things fresh, Insomniac is betting everything on one hero, no compromises. It’s a bold move, especially with the game launching in the middle of a PS5 fall lineup stacked with six AAA games in four weeks. In that kind of traffic jam, every exclusive has to hit hard—fast.

Why Insomniac made this radical choice

There’s a philosophy behind this decision, summed up by Reiner-Reed with a simple question asked at every stage: “Is this right for Wolverine? Does it tell a story centered on Logan? Is this the best way to make the player feel like they’re Wolverine?” That obsession with character coherence shaped the whole project, from the combat system to the choice of a linear structure instead of open world.

Mike Fitzgerald is adamant: just slapping Spider-Man mechanics onto a new character wasn’t enough. “This is our fifth PlayStation 5 title. We’re proud of that. But if we’d just taken a Spider-Man game and swapped in a Wolverine model, it wouldn’t have worked. It wouldn’t do the character justice.” This fifth PS5 game also lands at a pivotal moment for Sony, as the PS6, expected in 2027, faces technical roadblocks and the current console has to carry the torch for years to come. The three-tiered Rage system, the tighter camera, the more brutal combat pacing—every second of gameplay is designed to ooze Logan. Reiner-Reed puts it plainly: “No other character could have this set of abilities and mechanics. It’s Logan, period.”

Allies are here—but never playable

Mutant fans, don’t worry: Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t just one man against the world. Mystique, Sabretooth, and Jean Grey are along for the ride, jumping into fights with Logan and unleashing combo attacks. During the preview, journalists could trigger team-up moves with Sabretooth to mow down enemies, or call in a sniper shot from Mystique to stun a Sentinel prototype during a wild boss battle.

It was Jean Grey’s appearance in the story trailer that really set the rumor mill spinning. The camera trailing her into a bar looked like the perfect setup for a playable sequence. Fitzgerald shot that theory down: “There’s definitely a team dynamic there. But we focused on Wolverine as the playable character, to make sure we nailed that experience.” Allies deepen the story and gameplay, but they never take the controller out of your hands. At Madripoor’s Princess Bar, Logan can even share a vulnerable moment with Mystique in a “Never Have I Ever” mini-game—where you pick Wolverine’s answers—or talk with Jean Grey about his fear of his own rage.

Here’s what allies actually bring to the gameplay—without ever being playable:

By refusing to split the experience between multiple protagonists, Insomniac is taking a calculated risk that could redefine what solo superhero games can be. If it pays off on September 15 on PS5, don’t be surprised if other studios follow suit. The mantra: fully embody one hero, no distractions. And while you wait to unleash those claws, there’s plenty to keep you busy: ten new free games just hit the PS Plus catalog, and there are some real heavy hitters in the mix.
