State of Play: FF7 Revelation Gets Release Date and a Flood of New Features
Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches April 8, 2027. Square Enix just dropped the release date for the final chapter of its Remake trilogy, alongside an extended gameplay trailer showing off a massive open world, a brand-new combat system, and never-before-seen areas.
It was during the September 3 State of Play that Square Enix finally pulled back the curtain on Final Fantasy VII Revelation. April 8, 2027: the wait ends for the Remake trilogy
On April 8, 2027, players will finally get their hands on Final Fantasy VII Revelation. That date—flashed in gold at the end of the showcase—marks the culmination of a massive project that began almost seven years ago to the day. Between Remake in April 2020 and Rebirth in February 2024, Square Enix took its time building each layer of this trilogy. This final chapter promises to be the most ambitious yet, and tonight’s gameplay trailer leaves no doubt about the scale of the project.
With an already packed fall 2026 release calendar, this announcement positions Revelation as one of spring 2027’s biggest events. Square Enix looks to have found the perfect window to wrap up the saga without getting lost in the competition.
A massive open world with the Highwind and Piko
If Rebirth already expanded the horizons, Revelation takes things to a whole new level. This is an open-world action RPG where the legendary Highwind airship is both your main ride and your evolving HQ. With a single call, the Highwind swoops in, letting you take off, soar over biomes, and dive toward any point of interest you spot from above. The parachute mechanic—requiring precise timing to land exactly where you want—adds a skillful twist to every descent.
On the ground, your personal chocobo Piko takes over. Far from just a mount, Piko levels up alongside you and jumps right into the action during battles. You can fuse midair while riding or hop off to switch to classic combat. A grappling gun rounds out your traversal toolkit, letting you scale rooftops—even in urban zones like Wutai’s capital. Between airship, chocobo, parachute, and grappling hook, your freedom of movement is next-level.
The FITS system shakes up combat
The biggest gameplay shakeup is called FITS. This gear system assigns each party member one of four available roles, radically changing their combat abilities. The four FITS roles are:
- Warrior: focused on direct attacks and raw damage
- Knight: defensive, drawing enemy attention and shielding allies
- Black Mage: specializes in offensive magic
- Summoner: enables coordinated attacks with a summoned entity
The trailer shows Vincent as a Summoner, chaining devastating attacks with his summon, while Cid dons the Knight role to shield the party. Both characters finally join the playable roster, and their arrival brings even more depth to the synergy system introduced in Rebirth. Character combos multiply, like the Cid-Yuffie duo spotlighted during the reveal.
Square Enix calls Revelation the “ultimate version” of the Remake series’ combat system. The proven action-strategy blend is still here, but FITS adds a new layer of customization that should keep every battle feeling fresh.
Wutai, Weapons, and new content galore
When it comes to content, Revelation doesn’t hold back. Wutai—the warrior nation locked in open conflict with Shinra—emerges as one of the game’s standout zones. Its capital, fully explorable, stands out with its unique look and culture. You can scale rooftops with your grappling hook, snap photos of the cats roaming its alleys, and above all, dive into a geopolitical powder keg as tensions with Shinra reach their peak. Rocket Town is also confirmed as a new area, and fast travel lets you revisit every previously explored location.
The Weapons—those colossal creatures iconic to Final Fantasy VII—are now field bosses, newly awakened to defend the planet. On the activity side, Queen’s Blood returns with a new arc focused on Red XIII, promising enemies with unique abilities. Side quests are deeper too: their story and gameplay shift depending on your chosen character. Faces from the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII also appear, including Cissnei, last seen in Rebirth. And for speedrunners: you can now fast-forward through cutscenes.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation lands April 8, 2027, aiming to deliver a worthy finale to a trilogy seven years in the making. With its open world, FITS system, and packed content, Square Enix is going all-in for this last act. Expect more details in the coming months. The curtain’s rising—now we’ll see if the ending lives up to the hype.
