FF7 Revelation Is the Finale, Unless Fans Demand More
Back in 1997, Yoshinori Kitase thought he was done with Final Fantasy VII. Thirty years and a dozen spin-offs later, he’s saying the exact same thing about Revelation. History repeats itself—and he knows it.
With around 150 hours of gameplay spread across three entries, the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy is reaching its conclusion. Revelation, set to launch on April 8, 2027, is being billed by Square Enix as the grand finale of this adventure. Yet in a recent interview, Kitase dropped a hint that changes everything.

Kitase confirms: Revelation is “definitely the end of the series”
The message couldn’t be clearer. In an interview with Malaysian site GamerBraves, Yoshinori Kitase leaves no room for doubt: “We can confidently say this is the end of the series.” After Remake in 2020 and Rebirth in 2024, Final Fantasy VII Revelation will wrap up a massive project that’s been in the works for over a decade. Unveiled at Gamescom 2026 and detailed at the September 2026 State of Play, the game represents the culmination of a colossal effort. Kitase emphasizes his team’s commitment: “We really put everything we had into making sure this final chapter reached the highest quality possible.”
With roughly 150 hours of gameplay across three games—assuming Revelation is as generous as its predecessors—the trilogy delivers a monumental reimagining of the original. That’s a dizzying scale, especially when you remember the 1997 Final Fantasy VII fit on three CD-ROMs and clocked in at about 40 hours.
But Square Enix said the same thing… in 1997
The parallel is almost too perfect to ignore. Kitase himself admits it: “When we made the original Final Fantasy VII, we really thought we could say, ‘That’s it, time to move on.’” But the players had other ideas. The popularity of Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, and Sephiroth blew past anything Square had anticipated, and Midgar’s universe expanded far beyond the original game.
“The characters were so popular and so memorable. It was the fans’ response that led to spin-offs like Advent Children and Crisis Core,” Kitase recalls. The list of spin-offs born from that hype speaks for itself:
- Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005), the now-iconic animated film
- Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII (2006), the Vincent-focused TPS
- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (2007), the PSP prequel remastered in 2022 as Crisis Core Reunion
- Before Crisis, Ever Crisis, and several other mobile projects
What started as a “one-shot” has spawned nearly thirty years of content. So it’s tough to take any “final” declaration at face value.
The door’s still open: “Who knows what’s going to happen”
Kitase isn’t even trying to hide it. Right after dropping the word “end,” he adds a major caveat: “Who knows what will happen with the fans’ reaction and how people will enjoy this series and its finale. The door is open.” In other words, Square Enix isn’t planning any spin-offs right now, but nothing’s off the table. The studio is watching, waiting, and letting the community decide—just like thirty years ago.
It’s a tried-and-true strategy. If Revelation sparks the same passionate attachment as the original, if players clamor for more adventures with these characters, Square Enix will answer the call. The Final Fantasy VII universe is still packed with mysteries, side characters to explore, and untold stories. The ground is fertile, and the studio knows it.
On April 8, 2027, players will discover how this remake trilogy ends. But if Final Fantasy VII has taught us anything, it’s that the end is never really the end. It all depends on what the fans want next.
